Cracking paint is a common problem that can occur on old or even new coats of paint. Cracking paint can occur for a number of different reasons. Even so, some can be prevented. Cracked paint can make the surface, whether it be a cabinet, wall or ceiling, look terrible. L.W. Winslow Painting, Inc. would like to focus on the reasons why paint cracks and how to prevent or correct the problem.

Poor Paint Preparation

Often a fresh coat of paint will develop cracks when the surface was poorly prepared. Depending on the nature of the surface that is being painted, know that some surfaces require different types of preparation. Wooden surfaces need to be clean, which means old paint or stain needs to be sanded down and the dust cleaned off before painting. Other surfaces may need to be washed off or wiped down to remove dust and other particles that can prevent the paint from adhering to the surface properly. Other surfaces may require the need to be primed before it is painted. If the surface wasn’t properly prepared, cracks will form or other painting failures will occur. Proper preparation is essential for the longevity of the painting project.

Paint Too Thin or Thick on Walls

Along with proper paint preparation, another major contributor to cracks is when there isn’t the right amount of paint. When painting a surface it is important to find the right amount of paint. Too little or too much paint can result in cracks. Most surfaces require about two coats of paint. Each coat of paint should be evenly distributed. Avoid dripping or globs of paint on the walls. Apply two thinner coats and you should have the right amount of paint to prevent cracking.

Cheap, Low Quality Paint

Another major reason why paint will crack is due to the quality of the paint used for the project. Cheap or low quality paint does not last very long and can easily peel, bubble or crack. Many people will use cheap paint to reduce the cost of the project. However, that is a mistake that can result in cracks or worse. Good quality paint will ensure great results and a longer lasting paint.

Paint Adhesion Problems

Poor adhesion is a major reason why paint will crack. Poor adhesion can be the result of poor preparation. Another cause is weather. Humidity can prevent paint to adhere to the surface which is why it is important to paint during dry weather when painting the exterior of the home. Inside the home, open windows or use fans to help the paint dry and avoid humidity building up inside the home. Another reason why paint may not adhere properly is when the second coat of paint is applied before the first coat has had time to dry.

Age of Paint

The aging paint can have a number of different symptoms such as cracks, chipping or peeling paint. As paint ages it can become dull in color and become weak. When paint begins to age it is time to repaint the surface. Nothing stops aging paint and eventually, it will crack. When cracks or chips form it is time for new paint.

Nobody can confess to enjoying watching the paint dry though the transformation that comes with interior painting is exciting to see. To ensure you do not ruin your newly painted walls, it is very important to know how long paint takes to dry. Today, we at L.W. Winslow Painting Inc would like to further elaborate on the subject.

How Long Does Paint Take to Dry?

For average interior house paints, there are three primary stages in the drying and curing process. Paint dry to the touch, ready for a second coat, and fully cured are these prime stages. Keep in mind that this is for typical latex/acrylic interior paints as we continue discussing this.

Dry to the Touch Stage of Interior Painting

Your interior paint should be dry to the touch after about an hour. The paint won’t end up with paint on its fur in the event the cat brushes against the wall. There will not be any marring of the surface should your hand or clothing makes incidental contact with the paint during this 1st stage.

How Long to Wait Before Second Coat of Interior Paint?

After about four hours, most interior paints are ready for a second coat of paint. You are likely to end up with bubbling, dripping, or running paint in the event you move too quickly with the second coat. For maximizing your interior painting day, below are aa few tips.

                1) To reduce the humidity if it is high, you can run a dehumidifier or air conditioner. Since interior paint cures best with moderate humidity, do not bring the level too low, however.

                2) In order to promote air circulation for faster recoating time, a fan is also a good way. Onto your freshly painted walls, just make sure you are not spreading hair or dust.

                3) Make a note of the time you finish each wall. Rather than waiting four hours from the time you finished the last wall; you can start recoating each wall when it is ready that way.

Paint Cure Time

You need to wait two to four weeks in order to achieve fully cured status. The wall is ready for gentle washing once it is completely cured. By this stage its full resistance to scuffs, scrapes, and stains.

How Long to Let Paint Dry Before Putting Things on It?

It is probably not appealing to many people from the idea of waiting 2-4 weeks before returning furniture and pictures to their normal places. You do not need to wait the full curing time prior to replacing your furniture fortunately. Though to or three days might be better, just to be safe, one day is generally enough time to wait.

If your home is looking a little worn and tired, there is nothing that will pick it up like a freshly painted room. When you choose the right colors for your home, it can make a dramatic difference in the overall feel of the house. One of the most difficult parts of painting your home is selecting the right color. Knowing whether or not a color choice is going to be a fleeting trend or a color that will be here to stay can be difficult. You don’t want to find yourself constantly painting your home. L.W. Winslow Painting, Inc is here to talk about colors, and how to tell if the color you are choosing is going to be around for a while or is nothing more than a trend.

What Makes a Paint Color Trend?

Trends are something that becomes extremely popular over a short period of time and often becomes unpopular just as fast. Color trends usually only last a few years, unlike traditional colors that you can count on to stand the tests of time. However, when it comes to color, it can be fun to put some trend in your home. As long as you choose that color, knowing that it may be short lived, it can be a way to add some spunk in your home that you wouldn’t have added any other way. A great way to add a trendy color to your home is through accessories if you aren’t keen on painting the walls a trendy color that will have to be replaced sooner.

How to Know if a Paint Color is Trending or Not

A lot of the time, if there is a color that is simply trendy rather than a staple, you will be able to know it in your gut. A good rule of thumb that many people follow is the 5 year rule. If a color has been around for over 5 years and is still popular, it may be one that will stick around longer that you think and isn’t considered a trend. Usually trendy colors are on the quirky side of the spectrum rather than the safe side. If you enjoy quirky colors and don’t mind changing often, go for it.

Do Your Homework when You Choose Paint Colors

If you are having a difficult time deciding whether or not you should choose a color the border of trendy and staple, you can do some homework. There are many resources today that will talk about the trends that the design world is seeing throughout a year. If you put in some reading, you will be able to make the right choice.

When painting your home inside or outside, you will be faced with a number of different decisions. When picking out paint you will need to decide on brand, color, gloss, and if you need an interior or exterior paint. Many people often ask what is the major difference between interior and exterior paint. Some people will use an exterior paint inside the home in hope for a better protective layer. Others will make the major mistake of using an interior paint for the outside of their home. L.W. Winslow Painting, Inc would like to explain the major difference between interior and exterior paint.

Interior Paint for Walls & Ceilings

In the inside of your home, you do not have to worry about the walls being exposed to rain, snow, wind and the sun, which can cause exterior surfaces to decay. As the inside of the home is not exposed daily to these types of elements, you do not need a paint to stand against them. However, there are a variety of interior paints that can withstand moisture and other elements better than others such as semi-gloss. A semi-gloss paint is great for bathrooms and the kitchen or high traffic areas as they are much more durable. Even though some interior paints are designed to be more durable, they are not scuff resistant. If using an interior paint outside the home and the paint’s surface gets scuffed or damaged, moisture will get in. Once moisture gets inside interior paint, the paint will begin to peel or bubble off the walls. Interior paint will also degrade quickly when exposed to sunlight. Interior paint simply cannot withstand the outside elements.

Exterior Paints for Wood, Siding & More

Exterior paints are designed to withstand moisture from rain and snow, and the sun. Exterior paints are also designed to be flexible and will expand and contract along with the material they protect. Exterior paint also has the ability to reflect the sunlight, prevent color fading and damages due to the UV rays of the sun. Exterior paint is designed to withstand the outside elements. Even though exterior paints are designed to be strong, this doesn’t mean you will want to use them inside the home. Exterior paint needs to be outside in the open air as the gasses or solvent will evaporate into the open air. If inside the home the solvent is confined and can cause the air to be unhealthy. Never use exterior paint inside your home to ensure the health of those inside and to avoid the paint’s natural gases from building up inside the home.

Interior & Exterior Painting in Amagansett, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Hampton Bays, Montauk, North Haven, North Sea, Noyack, Quogue, Shelter Island, Sag Harbor, Sagaponack, Shinnecock Hills, Southampton, Springs, Wainscott, Watermill, Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, New York

When painting your home, always stick with exterior paint when painting outdoor surfaces and interior paint for the inside of the home. These paints are designed to be used in their right environments. When you are painting your home it is also recommended to use a high quality paint that ensures the paint project will last. For those who are preparing to paint the inside or outside of their home and need help, contact L.W.
There are many reasons that people love the fall season. Not only are the colors spectacular, but the crispness in the air is a welcomed reprieve after a long, hot summer. Another thing that makes the fall season great is that it is one of the best times to paint the outside of your home. There are many reasons why this is the case. L.W. Winslow Painting, Inc. is here to talk about why you may want to consider painting the outside of your house this fall.

Best Temperature to Paint Exterior of House

Many people see the fluctuations in the outdoor temperature and think that it may not be the best time to paint outside. Many people may not realize this, but when the temperature is around 50 degrees, that is actually the ideal temperature to yield the best results possible. As long as the temperature is above 50 degrees, it is actually a great time to paint. You just need to watch the dewpoint to make sure it stays low to allow for the application to be a smooth one.

Ideal Humidity for Exterior Painting

The fall season tends to be far less humid than the summer months. Humidity plays a big roll on how well your exterior paint turns out. Lower humidity will allow the paint to dry as it should.

Exterior House Repair

This is a great time to have painters make all the necessary repairs to the exterior of your home that are needed to paint. If there is damage like woodpecker damage, insect damage, mold staining, caulking failure or peeling paint, you want that to all get taken care of before entering the winter season.

Does it Rain in Autumn Season?

There is less rain during the fall than that of the summer months. Rainy days can really put a damper on not only moods but painting as well.

Add Curb Appeal

This is the perfect time of the year to boost your home’s curb appeal. Just as you are heading into the holidays, what better time to make your house look its best?

Choosing House Exterior Paint Colors

There are many considerations to make when choosing the right paint color for the outside of your home. First, you need to decide if you want to have a light or darker color. You should also take into consideration the color of your roof and choose a color that will coordinate with it.

Interior & Exterior Painting in Amagansett, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Hampton Bays, Montauk, North Haven, North Sea, Noyack, Quogue, Shelter Island, Sag Harbor, Sagaponack, Shinnecock Hills, Southampton, Springs, Wainscott, Watermill, Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, New York

Shiplap is a budget-friendly, stylish option for your walls. These applications are paintable and as a result, offers more flexible to better accommodate your design preferences. Today, we at L.W. Winslow Painting, Inc would like to offer some advice on painting the shiplap in your New York home.

Paint Types Used for Shiplap

You need to know which type of paint is ideal for a shiplap-style wall before you begin the painting project. Use a water-based paint-and-primer in one for the best results on wood shiplap. Because you’ll only be using one product instead of paint and a separate primer, this helps you save time and money. The all-in-one paint product also has superior coverage and will require fewer coats of paint. Keep in mind the right paint sheen to fit the style you have in mind as well as the functionality. Though matte finishes look amazing on shiplap, it can be hard to clean. A semi-gloss sheen will be easier to wipe down and still look great. between sheen like satin or eggshell will provide a more matte look while still being relatively easy to clean.

Tips for Painting Shiplap

Painting new shiplap is better done before you install it. Before the shiplap is up on the wall it is easier to paint the edges. Prior to applying a water-based paint in a Urethane Enamel for finish hardness, if the shiplap is made of engineered wood (MDF or medium density fiberboard) instead of real wood, seal with an oil-based primer. Avoid using a latex wall paint. Being water sensitive, this prevents the water-based paint from damaging the MDF. To give the shiplap boards additional water and humidity protection, the separate coat of oil-based primer. Give the shiplap boards additional water and humidity protection though separate coat of oil-based primer. Before painting, don’t forget to fill in any nail holes and gaps in the shiplap with spackle or caulk. Fill in holes and gaps after the shiplap is in place and then touch up these areas with paint should you paint the shiplap prior to installation. Taking extra time to paint the gaps and shiplap grooves with a small brush paint it like wall if the shiplap was already installed.

How to Paint Shiplap

1) To protect it from paint splatters and drips, cover the floor and surrounding area.

2) With sandpaper or a palm sander and wipe away any remaining sawdust, sand down the shiplap boards.

3) Apply a primer product if it is separate before the paint and allow it to dry completely. If you use an all-in-one paint and primer product, this step is not necessary,

4) With a paintbrush or roller prior to placing the boards on the wall if possible, apply the first coat of paint. You will find that using a small paintbrush makes it easier to get in all of those nooks and crannies that tend to be hard to reach if you are wondering how to paint shiplap grooves.

5) Clean the nail holes and fill with paintable caulk or spackle after installing the shiplap, or if they are already installed.

6) Sand the surface lightly once the caulk or spackle is dry.

7) Using the small paintbrush to make sure the nail holes and grooves are covered, roll or brush on a final coat of paint

There are lots of people that want to make sure their home looks its best and the only way to do that is to start from the outside and work their way in. The exterior of the house is a big part of what your home’s value and curb appeal is. You want to make sure that the paint on the outside of your house is in good shape and colors that accent the property. This means that over time you will have to make sure you have your home painted. The paint is not something that is going to last forever. It will start to fade, chip and wear and will need to be redone. The paint on the house can be re-done as often as you want to make a change or update the look. When you are ready to paint your house, it is important to know what you need to do to prepare. L.W. Winslow Painting. Inc outlines how to prepare your home for paint.

Exterior House Repair

One of the first things you want to make sure you do is to check the house for damage. You can make some notes about any areas that are chipped, cracked or damaged. These areas are the first thing you need to make sure are taken care of before you can move forward. You want to make sure any areas that are chipped and cracked are removed and the area has been sanded down. These areas will need to have to be treated if you want to have the end result looking good and smooth. The other area of the house that will need to be checked is the trim work. These are wooded areas like the eaves and window trim. They can be damaged over time from the wear and tear as well as the weather. These areas may need to be sanded down and prepped so that they can take a new coat of paint.

Clean Exterior Walls Before Painting

The other thing you want to have done is to have a nice clean canvas to have painted. The canvas is your home and it happens to be outside and exposed to all the elements. The exterior of the house can have debris and dirt on it that can be a problem when you go to have the home painted. That is why one of the most important aspects is to make sure your home has been power washed. This is a process that a professional can do to use powered water to make sure that the dirt is washed away. It is a great way to have a nice clean canvas so that there is not any debris that will cause the paint to not stick.

Paint Your House

Now that you have your home prepped you can make sure that it is painted. You want to make sure you hire a professional that can do the job in the right way and that the end result is something you love. The professional can also make sure that good quality paint is used and that you are happy with the result you get.

There is no doubt that when you are working with paint, you can make a big impact without breaking the bank. There is no home improvement project you can do that will have the same impact that paint will on your home. If you have lived in your home for a while and are looking for something that will bring a fresh breath of air into your home, there are some small painting projects that will deliver those results. L.W. Winslow Painting Inc is here to share some of the smaller projects that will still have a big impact on your home.

Painting Interior & Exterior Doors

Doors are used every single day in your home. Over time, they may start to look discolored and even show some chipping and other signs of wear and tear. This can especially be true for your front door. Choosing the right front door color can have a large impact on the overall look of the outside of your home. Choosing a color that is inviting and complimentary to the color of the outside of your home can bring new life to your home and boost your curb appeal. If the interior doors haven’t been painted since you moved into the house, it may be time to give them a fresh coat of paint as well.

Paint Baseboards & Trim

The baseboards and trim in your home can start to look just as worn as the doors as time goes on. They are often a forgotten area in your home. When you give them a fresh coat of paint you will be able to get rid of all the scuffs and scratches that have likely accumulated on the surface. This can give your home a fresh look that you may not have realized it needed. Nothing will make your home look as fresh as painting the baseboards.

Painting Hallway Walls & Ceilings

Hallways are areas that are often experiencing high amounts of traffic throughout the day. If you have small children, they likely run their little hands across the walls as they walk by. This leaves behind smudges as well as staining that can be difficult to clean off the surface without removing the paint. Just like your trim, you can’t always clean the smudges off and should just repaint the walls instead.

Bathroom Paint Colors

The bathrooms is often in need of a fresh coat of paint before other areas of the home because of how frequently it is used. Not only that, but hair products and other factors play a role in discoloring the walls. A fresh coat of paint will give your bathroom the boost that it needs.

There are many areas of the house that may need your attention and touchup. One thing that most people keep an eye on is the paint on the walls. The great thing is that this is a part of home renovations that is fun and can change the entire look and feel of the space. You can choose a new bold color to accent your new furnishings. You can also go with a color that lightens and brightens the house as well. The paint in your house can start to wear out, become cracked or damaged and that is when you might decide to have them redone. When it comes to the paint on the exterior of your home it can go overlooked and when it starts to become damaged you want to make sure that you have it repainted. The great thing is that there are things that you can do to avoid letting your paint become damaged on the exterior of your home. L.W. Winslow Painting, Inc outlines what you can do to avoid letting your exterior paint become damaged.

Trees & Shrubs Can Damage Paint

When it comes to your home you want to have it look its very best. This means for most people that they want their home to be the center of attention. Then they have it outfitted with trees, shrubs, bushes and flowers to make the property look amazing. They also might want to have some hardscaping such as rocks, stone path and even pavers. These are all needed to make your house look balanced out. The problem is that your landscaping can actually cause some trouble for the paint on the side of your house. You want to make sure that the trees on your property and the bushes and shrubs are not too close to the house. They can start to get too close and then they will hit the house and rub up against it. This can easily cause damage to the paint on the exterior of your house.

Can Sprinklers Hitting House Damage Exterior Paint?

The exterior of your house is exposed to the sun, rain, wind and other weather. If you have your home painted by a professional painter that uses good quality paint it is intended to withstand. That does not mean that your home is protected and that you do not have to worry about it. One of the things that tends to happen is that when the landscaping is being watered the sprinklers might hit your house. The issue is that if the water is hitting your house in the same spot every time the plants are being watered it can cause damage to the paint then to the house itself. You want to make sure that you have your landscape sprinklers adjusted so that they are not hitting the house.

Dirt & Debris Can Damage House Paint

It may not seem like it but your home can start to become covered with dirt and debris that will attach to the house. The longer you let the dirt and debris stay on the house the more damage it can start to do. You want to make sure you have your house pressure washed to remove some of the dirt that could be breaking down the color.

Home Repainting & More in Amagansett, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Hampton Bays, Montauk, North Haven, North Sea, Noyack, Quogue, Shelter Island, Sag Harbor, Sagaponack, Shinnecock Hills, Southampton, Springs, Wainscott, Watermill, Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, New York

Water stains on the ceiling and walls can be left behind from recent rains or plumbing damage. Having the eyesore staring them in the face is something most homeowners are annoyed with. To remove or conceal these water stains are something that comes to mind. The water stains can potentially be painted over to conceal these unsightly stains is the good news. Before these water stains can be painted over, however, there are a few things you need to do. Considering this, we at L.W. Winslow Painting, Inc. would like to offer some suggestions on how you can effectively paint over water stains left on your ceilings and wall.

Stop Water Leak

The first thing you need to do is have whatever caused the water leak repaired before you begin your painting project. The water stains will just continue to get water stains over the coating of paint and you will have a continued cycle of repainting over the stain in the event is left unrepaired, or the repair is if poor quality. Before taking on the painting project, make certain the source of the leak is efficiently repaired. Usually a roof leak is where the water stains on the ceiling come from, so start looking around a vent, a vent pipe, the chimney, or other such feature that water can easily penetrate. A professional roofer can inspect and make sufficient repairs. Generally due to the deterioration of the caulk, the decayed or faulty wood, or there is an issue with the door or window itself is where the water stains near or around the door or window. A professional can assess the issues and get the problem addressed.

Dry Water Stain Before Painting

You might have a leaky pipe that will need repairs if water stains are along a wall where there are water pipes for an appliance or fixture. A professional can detect the source of the leak and make the needed repairs. Make sure the water stain area is completely dry after the repairs have been made. The paint application will not be a success should any plaster or drywall not be fully dry. To expedite the drying process, use towels to dry any standing water and implement dehumidifiers.

Treat Mold on Walls & Ceilings Before Painting

The mold will need to be effectively killed, in the event you spot any mold, which indicates a long-term leak. It is in your better interest to avoid mold killers that are toxic and eliminate risking harmful exposure, so contact a pro to ensure the mold is efficiently removed. Also, a professional can tell you if any sections need to be replaced should the mold be too severe. Causing health concerns with long-term exposure, the lingering mold will also deteriorate materials it is growing on.

Prime Before Painting

If you skip this step you will see the water stain through the paint, once the area is fully dry and mold problems are taken care of, prime the surface with a stain-blocking primer. Select a high-quality interior paint from there. You will have to repaint the whole surface, even if you match the existing color of the wall or ceiling. Blending a patch can be a challenge and will look obvious.

Interior & Exterior Painting in Amagansett, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Hampton Bays, Montauk, North Haven, North Sea, Noyack, Quogue, Shelter Island, Sag Harbor, Sagaponack, Shinnecock Hills, Southampton, Springs, Wainscott, Watermill, Westhampton, Westhampton Beach, New York
