Exterior Painting
The right paint and color will not only protect the exterior of your home; but it can also help you express your personal sense of style, improve the "curb appeal" of your property and in some cases, increase the value of your home.

Preparing to Paint : Remove as many items as you can: shutters, house numbers, fixtures, outdoor furniture or any items that may by in the way. Protect any landscape plantings or items that can't be removed by covering them up with drop cloths. Also drop out any decks, flooring or surfaces to be protected. The surface must be clean and free of any flaking, peeling or existing failed finishes. Be sure to clean (an option is to power wash), repair (fill in holes or cracks with caulk), and prime all surfaces before painting your house's exterior.

Tools & Supplies: Exterior paint projects may require the use of ladders, scaffold and/or in some cases professional lifts. Brushes, rollers, stain applicators and spray systems come in a wide variety of sizes and types -- specific for the project @ hand; ask an experienced exterior painting contractor for help.

Primer Coat: Be sure to prime any bare wood, filler or spackle to seal prior to painting.

Exterior Paint Finishes: Ask your local exterior painting contractor or paint supply professional to help you choose the proper finishes. Paint finishes are available in a wide variety of finish, type and sheen; i.e. acrylic, latex, oil base or stain finish -- transparent, semi-transparent, semi-solid and solid finishes. Products are formulated specifically for use on decks, sidewalls, roofs and/or trim. Choose the proper product for the job.

Some examples include; Exterior wood stains, deck stains, Cabots Stains, Behr Exteiror Finishes, Fence Stain Colors, Cedar Fence Stains, Wood Deck Stains, Minwax Stains, Sikkens Deck and Wall Finishes, Sikkens Window & Door Finishes, Best Deck Stains and Sealers, Best Exterior Paint.

Properly Painted Surface: A properly painted surface is described as: "One that is uniform in appearance, color and sheen. It is one that is free of forein material, lumps, skins, runs, sags, holidays, misses or strike-through marks. It is a surface which is free of drips, spatters, spills or overspray. Criteria for a properly painted surface shall be determined when viewed without magnification at a distance of five feet under normal lighting.
