Drywall comes with many names; gypsum board, plasterboard, sheetrock and more. This product is the used to construct interior walls and ceilings. No matter how great drywall is for constructing walls, it can sustain damage over time. There are several ways that drywall is damaged and luckily, it can be repaired to look like new when this damage occurs. L.W. Winslow Painting, Inc is here to share some of the most common causes of drywall damage.
Drywall Water Damage
If there is one thing you need to know about drywall, it is the fact that drywall and water do not mix. Water will not only make your sheetrock look awful, but it will also weaken it considerably. When there is water damage on your drywall, mold and mildew will start to grow quickly. This is why it is so important that any water damaged drywall is replaced right away.
Small Screw & Anchor to Large Holes in Drywall
There are a number of reasons that holes happen in drywall. Maybe someone was playing a little rough and fell into the wall resulting in a hole, or the door swung open with force and the doorknob went through the drywall. However larger or small the hole of the drywall, it can be repaired. For smaller holes you may be able to use joint compound to fix the problem with a little sanding and some fresh paint, you may not even notice there was an issue. When you are dealing with larger holes though, you need to remove a large section of the drywall and hang a new piece that is much more time labor intensive to fix.
Hairline & Other Cracks in Drywall
A crack is very common in your drywall, especially up towards the ceiling. These small cracks can happen when settling occurs in your home as well as moisture problems and drywall that has been poorly installed. If you have cracks in your drywall, they need to be repaired with joint compound.
Drywall Corner Damage
The corners of your walls can really take a beating. You may start to notice that there are signs of damage where the corners have been repeatedly bumped by vacuum cleaners and furniture as it gets moved from one place to another. To repair it, you have to remove the damaged areas with a hacksaw and replace it. This can be difficult to do if you don’t have any prior experience working with drywall.
Termite Damaged Drywall Walls
Sometimes there is damage to your drywall when you have a termite infestation in your home. If you have a termite infestation, hopefully you have caught it early and the damage is minimal. Any drywall that has sustained any damage will need to be replaced though.
