You are finally ready to get a new paint color for your house. It’s been a long time coming and it is finally time. So how do you start? And what can you do to remove the old paint? L.W. Winslow Painting, Inc is here to help you with just that. Let’s go over a few ideas that you can do when you are removing paint from your exterior home.
Hand Tools for Removing Paint
Hand tools are pretty easy to use and are great for doing small sections and easy to reach places. The tools you will need is a putty knife, paint scraper, and wire brush. The putty knife is like the ones you use for drywall but the blade has different thicknesses and materials. If you have a lot of paint chipping away a paint scraper is great for this. You can find this at any local hardware store. If you have those little paint chips you can’t seem to get, then a wire brush is what you will want to use.
Power Tools to Strip Old Paint
If doing a larger section of your home then using power tools is the way to go. You can get a paint scraper that is dedicated to scraping off your paint. There is an angle grinder that helps get into those corners that you can’t get. A palm sander is great for smoothing the wood or even with a rough grit of sand paper you can also remove some paint.
Is there a Chemical that Removes Paint?
Using a power tool or hand tools can be tiring. Sometimes you need a little extra boost to get the paint off. There is a chemical paint stripper that you can put on your old paint and then scrape or sand off the paint. The downside to using this is if you are doing the whole house it can start to get expensive.
Can You Remove Paint with Heat?
If you don’t want to sand your house or use chemicals there is a different way. You can remove the paint with a heat gun or infrared paint remover. The heat will make the paint peel away super easily from the surface it is on. When you are using the heat gun you need to be careful. If you are using it on wood and if it overheats on the wood, the embers on the wood could ignite later on.
Remove Old Paint with a Power Washer
This is a great way to remove the paint from your house, plus it also cleans the dust and debris. But this should not be the only way you remove the paint. The power washing can loosen up the paint, but you will still have to scrape it away. Power washing won’t always get it perfectly clean. You also want to be careful if you are power washing on wood. You don’t want to ruin the wood.
