You may find that most painting labels will tell you that you can paint in temperatures ranging from 50-90 degrees, but always stay well within those numbers. You need to remember that surface temperatures are often hotter or colder than the actual temperature of the outdoor air. This is especially true in areas that receive direct sunlight or no sunlight at all.
Dangers of Painting in Temperatures Too Warm
The main problem with hot temperatures is rapid drying. When paint dries to quickly on a surface that is too warm, it causes the paint to bubble and blister. You should always try to follow the sun around your home so you aren’t ever painting in direct sunlight. This will help you avoid any rapid dry problems. When completing the painting process, you want the paint to be dry by the time the sun goes down. As the outdoor air cools off at night, dew often forms and can affect the paint if it isn’t completely dry yet.

When the temperature of the outdoor air is too cold, you have almost the exact opposite problem. The paint isn’t able to dry and cure properly. This causes a long list of problems including dirt, dust, debris and insects that get stuck in the paint. If you want to avoid problems like cracking and peeling, you should avoid painting on cold days. Cold temperatures will effect the life span of the paint and your exterior paint job won’t last as long.
When Painting, Don’t Forget Nighttime Temps
While the temperature during daylight hours is important, so is the temperature at night. There are several paints that take a full 24 hours to cure completely. If the temperature is dropping well below ideal in the night, it can have an effect on how your paint cures as well.
