When you have a baby in your home, you want to ensure that your home is the safest possible place. This includes when you have decided that you want to paint certain spaces in your home. Whether you are painting the baby’s room or other parts of your house, you want to make sure you’re using paint that is going to be safe for your baby. While some people think that there isn’t any paint that could possibly be safe for a baby, we beg to differ. L.W. Winslow Painting, Inc is here to talk about what type of paint you should be using when you have a baby in your house.
Is it OK to Paint with a Newborn in the House?
If you have a baby in your home, you are going to want to choose paint for your home with care. You are going to be looking for paint that has zero VOCs in it to ensure there aren’t any harmful fumes present during the painting process. Most modern paints will fall under this category. The fumes that come with painting put your baby more at risk than it does you because your baby’s lungs aren’t as developed as yours are. Some of the side effects of harmful fumes from paint may include:
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Rashes or skin irritations
- Vision issues
- Damage to the respiratory system
Can Baby Sleep in Room after Painted?
When you have a freshly painted room, you want to make sure you wait long enough after the painting process is over to bring a baby into the space. If you are using a zero VOC paint, you can take a baby into the space a mere few hours after painting is finished. Other paints that have stronger fumes will require more time to pass before a baby will be safe in the environment. If you have painted your baby’s room, you may want to wait a little longer before you have the baby sleep in the room. Most professionals will recommend waiting 48 hours to be on the safe side. This is because when a baby is sleeping, it is harder to tell if they are having adverse side effects to the fumes.
Should I Be Worried about Lead-Based Paint?
If you live in an older home, there is a chance that there is lead based paint on the walls. Before you have your baby and bring the baby home, you will want to make sure you get rid of the paint or encapsulate the paint to ensure your baby is safe.
